Could Vincent Van Gogh have seen this photograph of Charles Dickens taken between 1858 and 1861 by London Potrait Photographer Geroge Watkins and then used it as source material /inspiration for his famous painting of Dr. Gachet? It is well known that Van Gogh was a great admirer of Charles Dickens.

Could Vincent Van Gogh have used this 19th Century print of St. John the Evangelist by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) as inspiration for his painting of Dr. Gachet? I understand Vincent had a large collection of reproductions and clippings of art that he kept in scrapbooks. He also worked as seller of art reproductions. The keen similarity of pose and mood immediately caught my eye when I chanced across this print. I don't recall ever seeing this comparison before.The original painting was sold by Christie's recently in auction.

I am presently reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I came across his usage of the word "Argot". I am thinking of using 'Argot" for the title of a future painting. Les Miserables is a very intense read...it has given me great insight into the mysterious weaving of life and has caused me to try not to past judgement so readily for things are never quite what they at first seem.

Answer: I find myself interested in Van Gogh's use of deep perspective as well as his involvement with humanity and contact with nature. Cezanne interests me in his rather ambiguous spatial relationships. I'm also interested in what Algernon Blackwood referred to as the greater subconsciousness and developing an awareness of this. With a lot of New Age thought there's this great interest in multi-dimensional mankind which I think is a great theme to explore. I'm interested in how, as a painter, I might express an increasing awareness of this.

My scanner does the job for my smaller size work, but I have not been showing any of my larger work because of the distortions in the painting dimensions which result from the camera I presently use.

Why Are Great American Figurative Artists Being Forgotten?

Why have so many fine American Artists of the past 20th century been removed from the art history books? Should alternative museums be created to house these artists/as is now being done for American comicbook artists and American illustrators. Maybe it is time to rediscover these American Greats. A revival/rediscovery similiar to what the Blues Guitarists went through in the 1960's perhaps is long overdo. The American Artists I am thinking of are the WPA Artists and those associated with them. I would like to open up this subject for discussion and comment.

I never got the chance to meet Raphael or Moses Soyer; wish I would have. I'm greatly impressed with their artwork. There is a humanistic spirit in their work which comes through so strongly.
I am very interested in hearing from anyone who might have stories to tell of them. I really hope that there will come someday a reexamination of their work. I believe there are many fine American Artists of the 20th Century whose work needs to be reevaluated now that the 20th century is closed.

which appeared in his book, Harvey Dinnerstein/
